Ad infinitum

2022-24

Video work

Ad infinitum was made as part of my 2022 residency and solo show Imagining the Fluidity of Permanence (an exchange between a 21st Century artist and a 17th Century building), at Casa Regis, Italy, curated by L. Mikelle Stanbridge. During the residency, I stayed in the small town of Mosso in an imposing Belle Epoque mill owner’s house and I had access to Casa Regis, a derelict 17th Century Nobleman’s house, ten-minute walk away in the village above. I spent much of my time alone, walking between both properties at different times of day. Ad Infinitum is a short, experimental film, collaged from clips of my day to day routines of opening and closing the doors and windows as I repeated the ritual of moving between the properties. The locks and catches of Italian shutters and the details of the old buildings were initially unfamiliar to me, and through repetition the actions became a daily rhythm of revealing and hiding spaces and views. The film is suggestive of broader themes in my practice and elements of my sculptural language: movements are recycled, scenes are revealed, bricks are blocking, wedges are efforting, buildings are voicing, and time is continuing.
