Strung
2023
Fiberglas sheet, string
200x 40cm

Strung was created during my 2023 residency at PADA, near Lisbon. Lisboa means “the good light” and during the residency I made several works using the changing light and shadows as materials, and experimented with creating “vessels” for light. Strung is made from a type of fibreglass only produced in Portugal. Fibreglass interested me because it is formed from a liquid in combination with fibres, and in becoming solid it fixes the fibres in time. There is a feeling of suspension, of pressing pause on a flow. It requires a significant force to transform a flat sheet into a volume, and once the column is formed, it is held in place with a minimal tie. The work is about the action of bringing things together, holding them under tension to create a moment of contemplation, and exploring the interaction of light and materials. Like many of my residency works, it is a blueprint that may be remade and further iterated on.
