Crappy little things to hold in your hand reflects on how loss of touch affects mental health. The velvet objects act as a catalyst to evoke physical connection and to remind us that this connection offers comfort. We can imagine engaging with them, lifting them from their static position, weighing them in our hands, feeling their softness and wondering about their contexts.
They are objects for action and communication. The forms, suggestive of familiar shapes, are made from repurposed velvet, roughly sewn together with no attempt to hide the casual nature of their making. They are filled with lumpy rubble so the textures of their stuffing shows. The plywood box they sit on is also roughly made with its method of construction evident. Being set low, it requires the viewer to lean in to survey the objects, hovering in the awkward halfway space between floor and table height.
The objects appear important but it’s not clear why they are so casually made. Only through touching them can they be activated. When detached and stationary they are robbed of their function, trapped between the known and unknown, toying with our understanding of care.
