The Rule
2020
Performance photography series - with fabricated 2 metre beech wood ruler
The Rule operates as a piece of sculpture and as a tool for spatial and relational exploration.
By marking out the enforced restriction of social distancing in physical form, the ruler provides an opportunity to reflect on the challenges brought about by navigating new spatial boundaries, the issues that ‘keeping distance’ raises in terms of separation, and how we choose to define togetherness.
We are also repeatedly reminded to keep checking our sense of self and place.
Working with The Rule started early in 2020 as solo interactions amongst the public. The work continued in a variety of ways, including with artist and collaborator Rebecca Stapleford, with the dance and movement group, In a Nutshell and with young people at the charity Young Gloucestershire.
